Care also about your partner, your children, grandchildren, friends and workmates! Help them to eat as healthy as possible, so you can enjoy them and your life more and for longer. Share the information on this website with them!

The Herbalife beginnings…

Jo Ann Hughes
Mark Hughes (1956–2000), the founder of Herbalife
The Herbalife founder, Mark Hughes was born January 1, 1956 in La Mirada California. His parents divorced in 1970, when Mark was 14, and from that point the family survived on welfare payments. After the divorce his mother suffered from “emotional problems” and battled obesity with prescription drugs. She became addicted to the medication and an accidental overdose of added amphetamines and sleeping pills took her life in Apr-1975, when Mark was 19 years old.

As a reaction to his mother’s death, Mark became obsessed with finding a safe way to lose weight. He wanted to solve the problems that had plagued his mother. He became involved in several weight-loss products and began selling diet products for Seyforth Laboratories via network marketing. When they collapsed in 1979, Hughes sold exercise equipment and weight-control products for another direct-sales company. When Golden Youth also went out of business, Hughes decided to start his own company and to develop his own brand.

Herbalife was founded in 1980 to help people lose weight safely with the goal of changing the nutritional habits of the world, one person at a time. Mark Hughes believed that “one person can make a difference and that difference is a healthier world”.

Some health experts doubted the efficiency of Herbalife products in the early years, and a U.S. Senate subcommittee called Mark before a hearing in May 1985 – charged with making “untrue or misleading” product claims. Referring to the panel of ‘weight-loss and nutrition experts’ who had criticised his testimony the day before, Mark asked the senators, “If they’re such experts in weight loss, why were they so fat yesterday?”

Mark settled with the regulatory agencies and continued to build Herbalife into a leading position in the health and nutrition industry – with Formula 1, that later became the #1 meal replacement shake in the world.
